Consumer Reports finds bacteria in leafy greens

New tests by Consumer Reports have found high levels of bacteria in packaged leafy greens that could indicate unsanitary conditions.

Tests conducted by an outside lab found that 39 percent of the samples contained levels of coliform considered higher than acceptable by industry consultants. Some 23 percent of the samples contained Enterocccous bacteria.

The magazine said Tuesday that while those bacteria do not generally make people sick, they could signal inadequate sanitation.

No deadly food-borne pathogens such as E. coli, listeria or salmonella were found.

The tests were conducted on 208 bags of greens — 16 brands in all — purchased last summer in New York, Connecticut and New Jersey stores.
